Bookpacks

Driver Primary School Council has endorsed the sale of student book packs. These packs contain stationary items that students will need for their year level.The school supplements book packs with additional stationary, art/craft materials and other curriculum related materials. Book packs cost $85 and are available from the front office.

Canteen

Driver Primary's canteen is open every day with healthy options to order for recess and lunch. Orders must be written on a brown paper bag and put into their class boxes or dropped off at the canteen. Students can also

purchase healthy options at recess and lunch time straight from the canteen.

School Photos

Class, individual and family photographs are taken once a year, usually at end of 2nd or start of 3rd term at the coolest time of the year. As per school policy, students are expected to be in full uniform for these photos. Whole school photos are also taken every 5 years.

 

 

Student Leadership Council

Individual students have the opportunity to display and improve their leadership skills by becoming members of the SLC. Students from years 4 - 6 elect two representatives from their year level to be on the SLC. 

 

Activities carried out by the SLC include:

• ideas for strategic planning

• fundraising for charity

• surveying the student body for advice on amenity provision and school rules

• taking an active part in school assemblies and looking after visitors to the school

 

A badge of office identifies all SLC members to the school community.

Outside School Hours Care

The OSHC is operated by the YMCA. They offer Outside School Hours Care and Vacation Care Programs for children from Transition to Year 6.

This program is designed for parents who require care for their children between the hours of 6am - 8:15am and/or 2:30pm - 6pm during the school term and 7:30am and 5:30pm during school vacations.

Emergency Policy

CYCLONE EMERGENCY

 

OUTSIDE SCHOOL HOURS

In the event of a Cyclone Watch or Warning please stay tuned to the local media. The Department Coordinator will make decisions regarding the closure of schools on advice from the NT Counter Diaster Council. Any decision regarding the closure of schools will be broadcast over local media. In the event that schools are closed please keep your children at home. Students should not return to school until the warning is cancelled.

 

DURING SCHOOL HOURS

If an emergency should arise while students are at school the following procedure will operate:

• Any decision to close schools will be made by a Department Coordinator and communicated directly to the school. The local media will broadcast this information at which time you will be directed to collect your child/children from school.

• If you are unable to collect your child, please contact the school URGENTLY. You may arrange for a responsible adult to do so. Any child not collected two hours after school closure will be taken to PALMERSTON SENIOR COLLEGE, and placed into the care of the centre coordinator.

• If your child is attending Out of School Hours Care/Vacation Care he/she should be collected immediately from the centre.  Any child not collected  will be taken to PALMERSTON SENIOR COLLEGE, and placed into the care of the centre coordinator.

• Children are not to return to school until the warning is cancelled. Listen to the advice from the local media.

Where the terms Cyclone Watch and Cyclone Warning are used, they refer to the announcement issued by the Darwin Cyclone Watch Centre and broadcast by the ABC.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION

Emergency evacuation procedures for Fire, Flood, Bomb Scare and Armed Intruder are in place at the school. Procedures to be adopted, should any of these emergencies arise, may be viewed at the front office. All visitors to the school at this time are asked to follow instructions given by wardens or staff members.

Sports Houses

The school is divided into four houses. The students compete in an athletics carnival to score points for their team.

JOHNSTON - BLUE

NELSON - WHITE

ARCHER - GREEN

CHANEY - YELLOW

Families are kept in the same house throughout their stay at school.

School Camps

Every year our Year 5 and 6 students have the opportunity to participate in a camp. During odd years they travel to Canberra and the Perisher Valley (through Sydney) and during even years they travel to a less expensive, NT destination. Our camps occur during the dry season (usually either at the end of Term 2 or the start of Term 3). 

 

Driver Primary School recognises its obligation to ensure students living within the priority enrolment area have access to educational services and facilities at this school. Our priority enrolment area includes Driver, Marlow Lagoon, Farrar and part of Yarrawonga. More information, including maps can be found on the Department of Education Website.

 

Current enrolments at Driver Primary are at a level requiring the school to place restrictions on out-of-priority enrolment area enrolments to ensure that it meets its educational obligations to local students.

EMERGENCY TELEPHONE NUMBERS

If your child has a serious accident or becomes ill at school, we will contact you. The school must have your CURRENT emergency contact telephone numbers, which include your home, employment and/or a person designated as an emergency contact.Provision for these numbers is on the Student Enrolment Form. If changes occur, please contact the school immediately.

 

INFECTIOUS DISEASES - EXCLUSIONS FROM SCHOOL

In consultation with the Department of Health and the Centre for Disease Control, DoE adopts the CDC “Time Out” Poster on minimum periods of exclusion from school, pre-school and childcare facilities for children or staff with, or exposed to, infectious diseases (based on National Health and Medical Research Guidelines – December 2005).

 

SICKNESS/ACCIDENT PROCEDURES

Office staff have St John Ambulance First Aid training and will treat cuts and provide emergency first aid for accidents that happen during school hours. Children who become ill will be supervised in the sick room until parents can be contacted.

 

ADMINISTERING MEDICATION

In line with the DoE guidelines, parents must apply in writing to have medication administered to a child at school. Drugs, including those prescribed to modify student behaviour may require an attachment to be completed by the medical practitioner. These forms which enable staff to appropriately carry out our 'Duty of Care' are available at the front desk.

Parents and health professionals are teaching children to self manage their asthma medication. However, it is important that the school be kept informed where a student is an asthma sufferer and is undertaking self-medication so that our records can be noted in case of an emergency situation arising. Driver Primary is an Asthma friendly school.

 

HEAD LICE

Head lice infestation is a social problem in school communities from time to time. Where head lice become apparent at school, a letter will be sent home advising the parent of an infestation. To assist us in the prevention of head lice spreading please ensure you check your child/ren's hair and treat if required. More information, including treatment options can be found on the Department of Health's Website.

 

Your local Pharmacy will also have some treatment options. Many of our parents recommend detangling nay as an effectoive way to avoid getting nits. Nits (live eggs) hatch in 7-10 days.

INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOUR

Driver Primary uses 1-2-3 Magic approach with a reminder, warning and logical consequence approach to behaviour incidents. High level inconsiderate behaviour results in immediate level 2 consequence and parental involvement.
